Snow Photographs
I like it when it snows. It often makes for interesting even surreal-looking photographs. It often simplifies a composition. Where you might have a lot of distracting details in the foreground land, the snow will often cover those up, directing the viewer’s eyes toward the main subject. It also has a similar effect that shooting in black and white does, forcing one to concentrate more on composition than on dramatic, alluring color. It’s rather minimalistic in that way, adding a Zen-like quality to a subject that ight otherwise look overly cluttered. It can make a ragged picnic table top look clean and pristine. It can outline tree or plant branches giving a Sumi-e feel to a photograph. I shoot all kinds of subjects when it snows, from things as simple as bricks outlined in a slight coating of snow, to entire landscapes. There’s a meditative quality about a lot of snow photos, and there’s a meditative quality about walking through newly fallen snow, which has a dampening effect on sound, and realizing an area where you might normally hear car and truck traffic, is suddenly quiet. You realize there are fewer distractions and enjoy the solitude and simple things that the newly fallen snow offers.
