This article was awarded first place for Photo Stories in the 2019 New Mexico Press Association competition. One of the judges said, "​There were many compelling entries, but this one stood out as a clear winner. This is how you use a camera to tell a story. The black and white photos were spectacular and made great stand-alone images. Composition lighting — everything is nicely done."
