Chiaroscuro: Light and Dark
chiaroscuro |kyärəˈsk(y)o͝orō|
noun
the treatment of light and shade in drawing and painting.
• an effect of contrasted light and shadow created by light falling unevenly or from a particular direction on something: the chiaroscuro of cobbled streets.
I've always enjoyed strong contrast in my photographs. I feel it makes the images more dramatic. When I print in black and white with traditional analogue materials, I often opt to use photographic papers which have higher contrast. Strong contrast isn't chiaroscuro per se but I feel the term works as a good description of strong darks and lights in photographs.
